He has stated his non-guilt about the indictments

Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation director James the former director has denied the charges to providing misleading information to US legislators and obstructing a congressional proceeding.

His attorney submitted the plea representing him in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday.

The defense lawyer declared he would attempt to have the legal matter terminated for several reasons including that his the accused, a detractor of Donald Trump, was being singled out.

Mr Comey was indicted shortly after the former president pressured his attorney general to proceed against him.

Court Developments

At the proceedings on Wednesday, his attorney Mr Fitzgerald told the magistrate they planned to submit multiple petitions to dismiss the legal matter before a trial, arguing the government's case was spiteful and that a government lawyer was improperly appointed to handle the proceedings.

The former director's case was first overseen by a Virginia prosecutor, who left his position under pressure from Donald Trump after his probe into an additional political adversary - the New York official - was unable to bring criminal charges.

Judicial Environment

James Comey seemed in optimistic frame of mind as he came into the courtroom on Wednesday, conversing with his attorneys and making jokes. He was supported by his partner, Mrs Failor and offspring Maureen Comey, a US lawyer who the previous administration dismissed.

Following the reading to the judge recite his rights and the dual charges against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, James Comey was questioned if he comprehended the accusations.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you very much," he stated to the court.

Previous Events

James Comey was the FBI Director from 2013 to 2017 and was terminated about a few months into Donald Trump's first administration as president. At the moment, Mr Comey was leading an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between Russia and the presidential campaign.

While in office, Mr Comey caused a negative reaction from Democrats when he declared just immediately preceding the 2016 election that he was examining political contender the candidate's use of a personal email system. Legal actions against Hillary Clinton were not filed, causing criticism from the Republican party as well.

Current Allegations

Government attorneys claim Mr Comey gave untrue statements to US lawmakers during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the email probe as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he provided false information to the Senate by claiming he had not permitted an individual at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to journalistic entities information about the FBI investigations.

Legal representatives also accuse the defendant of "improperly attempting to influence, block and delay" the panel by making false statements to it.

Personal Comments

Via social media the former director posted to his Instagram after he was indicted, he stated he was innocent and charged Donald Trump of behaving like a "dictator".

"My family and I have understood for years that there are costs to challenging Mr Trump," he said. "We choose not to live on our knees."
"I'm innocent," he stated further. "Thus initiate a trial."

These allegations against the former director surfaced after Donald Trump published on digital channels calling for his top legal official, Pam Bondi, charge Mr Comey and other people.
