US Enforcement Begin Immigration Operation in the City of Charlotte
Federal agents have been deployed to the North Carolina city as part of President Donald Trump's intensifying campaign on undocumented immigration, according to official statements.
The campaign, dubbed "Charlotte's Web Operation", was revealed on recently, with officials stating that "criminal illegal aliens" would be the focus in the city.
"Our department is deploying DHS law enforcement to this location to ensure Americans are safe and eliminate security risks," a spokesperson announced.
Local officials, including Mayor of Charlotte Li Vyles, published a unified declaration opposing the operation, saying it was causing "unnecessary fear and uncertainty" in the resident base.
Operation Details
Specialized transport and elite units could be deployed for the North Charlotte operation, according to internal government documents.
A group from a local church performing maintenance at a church in east Charlotte retreated to wooded areas when authorities descended, with one man being apprehended, according to witness statements.
"We thought church was safe and we would be undisturbed," a teenage observer stated to media.
Background Situation
Since the presidential term renewal, federal authorities have been dispatched to several locations including Washington DC, Los Angeles and Chicago to deliver on the commitment of "an unprecedented removal initiative" in American history.
The Department of Homeland Security said they are carrying out the operation because local authorities has not honoured the approximately 1,400 Immigration and Customs Enforcement persons held, meaning they had been released due to "sanctuary policies".
Municipal Classification
Charlotte is not a immigration haven - urban areas that have policies in place to reduce support given to national immigration agencies - but it is a "officially recognized inclusive community". This is a official classification for municipalities that are focused on immigrant integration.
"The administration and its leadership will step up to protect Americans when local officials decline," officials declared.
Community Profile
Charlotte is an demographically mixed community, with about nearly one-fifth of residents being born outside of the country, according to census information.
Government agencies has not said how long the operations will continue. Windy City enforcement, which started last fall is continuing.
Official Response
In recent days, Democratic representative Alma Adams said she was notified about the initiative and was "seriously troubled" about federal officers coming to this region.
The subsequent location on the federal schedule is set to be New Orleans, according to reports, and that as many as two hundred officers could be dispatched to the location.
Campaigns in previous cities like Chicago and Los Angeles have faced criticism over concerns of excessive use of force.

Representatives said there are "multiple groups standing ready to assist persons needing legal advice on immigration concerns".
